Food Network’s Guy Fieri officiated a gay wedding recently decked out in a purple tuxedo to Oprah Winfrey’s former personal chef, Art Smith, and his partner of 15 years, Jesus Salgueiro.
Smith put together his wedding at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival in Miami and invited the first 101 couples to participate in his wedding – for free.
Celebrity Duff Goldman created a seven-tier cake for the couple and Miami drag queen Chi Chi LaRue DJ’d. Chopped host and formerQueer Eye For the Straight Guy Ted Allen was also in attendance.
Smith chose the theme 101 as a dig at Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who worked to keep same-sex couples from getting married. He said she was like Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians.
“We have our own Cruella De Vil, Pam Bondi,” he said. “She was determined that she was going to prevent equality from coming to Florida. For a state known for sunshine, it was living in the darkness when it came to LGBT rights and it was important to acknowledge that.”
White rose petals were thrown on the couples from balconies. They ate fried chicken, grilled lamb, crab-stuffed avocados, and empanadas.
“My only agenda is to celebrate this and make it true in every state,” Goldman said. The gay-rights advocate read of a baker that refused to create a cake for a lesbian wedding a few years ago and tracked them down and made them a cake. “We’re not arbitrators of morality, we’re cake decorators.”
