Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young made a speech at a conference for gay Mormons in Salt Lake City, Utah last week asking for tolerance and acceptance of the LGBT community.
The Mormon community is known for being anti-gay. In 2008 they actively pushed for the passage of California’s Proposition 8 which outlawed marriage equality.
Young, a Mormon that played football at Brigham Young University, gained attention in 2008 when his wife put a sign against Prop 8 up in their yard.
Young’s wife, Barbara, has an older gay brother.
“There is not a day that goes by that you are not on her mind,” Young said as he introduced his wife at the conference. “She has spent countless hours advocating for you.”
“Once of the most beautiful things about this church is that it can evolve,” Barbara said. “It may not go as fast as everyone wants, but it is evolving.
Currently, there are no out NFL players.
