Basketball legend Magic Johnson and wife Cookie proudly supported their 20-year-old son, Earvin Johnson III, nicknamed EJ, as he strolled down Hollywood’s Sunset Strip with his boyfriend, and red purse, in hand.
However, the news of EJ’s sexuality isn’t new for the Johnsons.
“We’ve known for a long, long time,” Johnson told TMZ.
Johnson and Cookie sat EJ down when he was about 12 and confronted him about his sexuality. When EJ admitted to being gay, Johnson told him he would love him regardless. He then gave him the “birds and the bees” talk, explained the importance of protection, and asked if any of his friends knew.
Johnson has been a long time ally of the LGBT community. In 1991, Johnson revealed he was HIV-positive. In 2008 he also fought to defeat Proposition 8, saying that, “Prop 8 singles out one group of Californians to be treated differently – including members of our family, our friends, and our co-workers.
Having a gay son doesn’t usually make headlines, but Johnson comes from the sports world, notorious for the lack of openly gay athletes. However, other players – such as Kobe Bryant – aren’t sure why Johnson’s support of his son is so shocking.
“Of course Magic is supportive of and loves his son. Why should anyone be surprised?” Bryant said. “What I can’t tolerate is a lack of tolerance.”
Johnson won’t tolerate ignorance either.
“I don’t care who’s attacking my son,” Johnson said. “I’m going to still love him. I’m going to still support him. He’s a good son, a good young man.”
